A Youth Mountaineering Education Program

Pakistan Youth Outreach Program

and to experience different cultures and societies.

An awesome splendor of nature and an amazing setting on earth, the great mountain ranges of the Karakorum, Himalaya and Hindukush all meet here! Also located here is the 8th wonder of the world, the Karakorum Highway; the gigantic Godwin-Austen (K2), the savage mountain, 8611m; Nanga Parbat, the killer, 8126m, and other 8000m peaks; as well as plenty of valleys that remain untrodden by stranger’s feet.  All of these provide huge potential to enjoy nature, adventure, and culture all in one visit.

The Karakorum is well known for its jagged, rough, tall, and adventurous mountains.  The mountains there are sheerer, steeper, and tougher than other ranges of the world and the potential for a real mountain adventure still exists in the country while it is becoming more commercial in other countries.  The Karakorum thus bears the great mountaineering adventure sport spirit for the real adventurer.  The killer mountain,  Nanga Parbat, and K2 are not easily conquered and therefore, the adventure is more appreciated since it provides more for the taste of the true alpinist.

Pakistan, with five 8000m peaks, hundreds of 6000+ meter peaks, the world’s largest glaciers, apart from the polar regions, Baltoro, Batura, Biafo, Snow Lake, and Hisparla are all worth visiting to experience the great glacial areas and rugged mountain valleys.

Pakistan adventure history is still developing when considering its adventure potential and possibilities, and yet, some great mountaineers have already been produced by the mighty Karakorum over the past three decades. Some have already started to set the standard, having gotten the highest achievements in the Karakorum for Pakistan.  Nazir Sabir, Ashraf Aman, and Rajab Shah are all great names in Pakistan adventure history with Rajab Shah having been honored with the prestigious national title of “Crown of Karakorum”!

In the Karakorum, Pakistani mountaineers started appearing in the mountaineering field in the early 1960’s initially in search of a livelihood and therefore, the adventure was limited mostly to being a source of income.  Also, it is seen that mountaineering has been comprised solely of male mountaineers and with the limits of it as a livelihood, it has not been viewed as a sport the way it has been in other countries. Due to all this, alpinism has no real name in the country, and with the male domination and no real participation of women, it could be seen as a rather one-sided sport.

History shows that there has never been much to encourage mountain adventure in Pakistan despite the country having hundreds of mountains, some of them still virgin and no single Pakistani expeditions have been led to these gigantic mountains.  One of the main reasons for mountain adventure being ignored is the lack of awareness and education.  There has not been any real education at the grass root level, no awareness, no events, no public entertainment programs, or shows focusing on mountaineering education in schools, colleges and university, nor has there been any encouragement either.

Now, after a short but ever growing mountaineering career, and struggling for the best alpinism in my country, it has been my dream to work for a great change at a grass root level with the support of my team members and mentors. Since beginning my mountaineering career at a very young age of 16, it has been my dream and objective to bring mountaineering education and culture to the youth and women of Pakistan; to encourage more youth participation in adventure sports and also to encourage more women to be equal to men in the mountains and bring a great name to the country as it has great adventure potential in the region and country! This is why the Pakistan Youth Outreach Program is envisioned as a gateway to educate youth and women!
